Artist’s Statement
My love of nature moves me to work from an emotional response to landscape or natural form. I see nature as a metaphor for human experiences and emotional states of being. I am inspired by color and often start there and then intuitively chose the tools necessary to make the paint convey feelings such as elation, tranquility or loss.
I vacillate between the concerns of an abstract and a figurative painter, employing abstraction to enhance my intention. Although the genre is called still-life my aim is to capture the movement found in natural settings. This can be seen as rippling water, sunlight flickering through the trees, twisting vines, falling leaves, and drifting clouds. I like to give the viewer the feeling that the painting is alive and changing, like nature. The painting is successful when it transcends labels and the mere depiction of subject matter. My goal is to move the viewer, touch a chord and trigger a memory of some integral moment, specific time or place in their life. My work is progressing from a naturalistic style of representation of nature to abstract compositions inspired by nature. They depict energy, movement and life forces spinning and whirling and infinite in their reincarnations.
